Macau GP set to run this weekend

The Macau GP, the world’s second most notorious motorcycle street race (the IOMTT being the first), is set to run this weekend, for its 50th anniversary.

At the time of writing this piece, BMW-mounted Michael Rutter has provisional pole, but that might change with this morning’s session, as several other prominent Isle of Man competitors are right behind — men like John McGuinness and Ian Hutchinson. But Rutter has been the man to beat in the practice and qualifying sessions so far.

Canadian Dan Kruger is absent from this year’s Macau race, due to serious injuries suffered earlier this year while racing in China’s Pan Delta series. However, Canadian fans roadracing fans should keep a close eye on the finish; if Ian Hutchinson wins, it could put him atop BMW’s global privateer’s championship, instead of Canadian Jordan Szoke. Of course, this depends how many points BMW alots for a Macau win, as rules for the Motorrad Race Trophy championship are a bit vague at times.

With World Superbike, MotoGP, the Isle of Man events, and most national roadracing series wrapped up, the Macau is really sort of a season-closer. We’ve heard it’s possible to watch it online, but we haven’t been able to figure it out yet, after multiple attempts, but if someone has the link, please post it in the comments section.
