Interested in CSBK’s new Lightweight Sportbike series? Show up at this month’s MMIC show in Toronto, and you can take in an information session for the new series.
The new Lightweight Sportbike series was announced last August, and we saw an update on the rules in December. It’s going to be quite similar to the previous CBR125, CBR250 and Ninja 300 spec series that CSBK has run for the past 10 years or so—it’s aimed at getting racers on the track on small-capacity sportbikes, with minimal investment (at least when compared to a pro superbike team). But unlike those series, the riders will not be limited to a single make/model of motorcycle. Bikes ranging from older Ninja 250s to newer CBR500s will all be welcome, as long as they meet the rulebook requirements.
With so many motorcycles eligible to race this year, there will be a wider range of competitors interested in racing. To explain the ins and outs of the new series, Canadian Superbike championship officials, along with other partners in the new series, will host a seminar on Saturday, February 17, at the MMIC’s Toronto Motorcycle Show (at the Enercare Centre). Running at 3 PM, this seminar gives riders a chance to meet the other stakeholders: Dunlop, Accelerated Technology, Pro6 and Bickle Racing will be there, along with Ontario-based race sanctioning body RACE.

CSBK to Host Seminar for Lightweights at Toronto Motorcycle Show
National motorcycle road racing organizers CSBK will host a meeting for competitors and teams interested in the new Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike class during the Motorcycle Show-Toronto at the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place. Hosted by Official Series Announcer Frank Wood, this Seminar will take place in the middle of the annual three-day Show, on Saturday, February 17 at 3 PM.
The Dalton Timmis Insurance presents Mopar CSBK on TSN booth at the Motorcycle Show will also feature an Autograph session with top Pro competitors on Saturday, in the earlier afternoon.
Saturday’s seminar will offer interested parties the chance to hear the latest information regarding the upcoming debut of the new category for small displacement, street-based motorcycles. Representatives of various companies and groups, including official “spec” tire supplier Dunlop, prep shop Pro6, suspension experts Accelerated Technology, trackside gear service provider and aftermarket supplier Bickle Racing and Shannonville-based Ontario sanctioning group RACE Events, will be on hand to meet potential competitors and teams.
The new Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike category replaces the Kawasaki Ninja 300 spec series that ran at the MoparCSBK Canadian Nationals in 2016 and 2017. The existing group of Kawasaki mounted competitors will form a major portion of the grid in the opening season of LTWT action.
While a wide range of machines are eligible to compete with the Kawasaki 300cc twin-cylinder, the major players are expected to include the KTM series of 390cc single-cylinder racers that had their own one-make series in MotoAmerica in the U.S.A. the past two seasons.
Also eligible to compete are the range of Honda CBR250 and CBR300R Honda singles, as well as the Honda CBR500 range of twin cylinder bikes. Horsepower outputs vary with weights for the bikes legal in the new class, measured at each venue on the official series Dynojet Dyno and weight scales. Joining the expected group of LTWT category front runners is Yamaha’s successful R3 twin cylinder machine, winner of an invitational, non-Championship Bickle Racing backed race at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park National round last summer. Richard Thompson of Milford, Nova Scotia won Sunday’s eight lap race, turning the fastest LTWT lap of the weekend at 1:41.552 seconds.
The best Pro Superbike Feature race competitors turn laps in the 1:20 range at C.T.M.P., and have about 160 more horsepower than the new LTWT category entries. Superbike are not allowed to produce more than 200 horsepower at the rear wheel when measured immediately post-race, while new rules restrict LTWT machines to the mid-40 horsepower range.
The 2018 Mopar CSBK National Championship tour kicks off at Shannonville Motorsport Park, ON, east of Belleville, on May 25-27. The RACE Events regional series opener May 11-13, also at Shannonville’s Pro Circuit, will allow rookie racers to attend a Friday Licencing School. That weekend’s opening SuperSeries activities includes two non-Championship Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike races conducted with full National structure in place.
Motorcycle Show – Toronto hours are: Friday, February 16 (noon – 9 pm); Saturday, February 17 (10 am – 8 pm); Sunday, February 18 (10 am – 5 pm). Discounted advance adult tickets are on sale now for $16 through the website’s online box office and at select Ontario dealers. The show falls on the Family Day weekend and special Family Passes are available for $42 (2 Adults & 2 Juniors. Children 5 and under admitted free).
