New KTM 890 Adventure R for 2023

KTM just took the wraps off an updated version of its middleweight ADV bike last weekend, with a long list of minor tweaks for next season. Although none of these changes are earth-shattering on their own, this mid-production update (with no notable upgrades to suspension or powertrain) should still result in a machine that’s much more enjoyable for 2023.

Note that this is the R model, not the standard 890 Adventure. As such, it already comes with higher specs for better off-road capability. See the list of updates below; note that one of these changes (the indicators) is for US models, but we’d presume we’ll see it in Canada. Another update is for tires on international-market bikes, so we may not see that upgrade (Mitas Enduro Trail + rubber) here in Canada.

Updates for 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R

  • Reworked bodywork & fairing inspired by the KTM 450 RALLY
  • New windshield offering improved airflow
  • Reworked suspension settings for reduced long-distance fatigue
  • Upgraded 5” TFT display with USB connection & new pictograms
  • Improved ABS components with new modulator (9.3 MP)
  • OFFROAD ABS linked with OFFROAD MODE & (optional) RALLY MODE
  • Updated turn-by-turn plus navigation system
  • Introducing the DEMO MODE functionality
  • Handlebar switch with hazard warning
  • New engine protector
  • New & more offroad oriented tires (INT models)
  • LED indicators (US models)

Again, while these changes will most likely make the bike feel different (suspension, windscreen, ABS updates), and be more enjoyable to ride (new TFT screen, new GPS system). The Demo Mode is also interesting, as it’s sort of an advertisement for the bike’s add-on electronics—which aren’t really add-ons at all. Some of the advanced features on KTM machines (quickshifter, Rally Mode) are pre-installed from the factory, but you must pay extra to have a technician activate them. Now, you can try these features for 1,500 kilometers of riding via Demo Mode, and decide if you want them or not.

We haven’t seen a Canadian MSRP for the updated 890 R; it was released at the KTM Adventure Rally in Idaho over the weekend. We’re sure we’ll see it in dealerships by late fall, or winter at the latest. Expect a price tag in the $17,000 range.
