Yamaha FZ-09 updated for 2017

The Yamaha FZ-09 will look different next year, and also receive several mechanical upgrades.

Yamaha’s given their three-cylinder naked bike the Transformers makeover, bringing it in line with the rest of the made-in-Japan competition, with more of that angular bodywork and edgy headlight.

Along with the cosmetic updates, the bike gets some welcome mechanical upgrades: fully-adjustable suspension, two-level traction control (which can be turned off), ABS, slipper clutch, and an optional quickshifter.

Aside from these changes, the bike is basically the same for next year, which allows Yamaha to keep the price down. Right now, the 2016 model is selling for $8,999; the 2017 version will sell for $9,749, so all the improvements come with a price. However, that’s a lot of upgrades for $750.

    • I’d say better than the FJ-09. I had one and the aerodynamics are completely screwed. Windscreen is useless and it’s unstable front end makes it dangerous. Add in all these updates to the fz-09, and all the FJ-09 really has going for it is a 12v socket, a center stand and passenger grab handles. I’ll be picking one of these up day one.

    • Hear, hear.

I love the idea of the FZ09, but wish it had a bit more tail section to actually carry pillion or a tank bag. The aggressively short tail looks cool, but simply isn’t functional enough for me.

    • I don’t know… I applaud Yamaha for at least trying something a little different with that hugger treatment for the license plate. The front end now looks like the result of a Kawi Z1000 and an FZ-10 getting together. FZ 09 still isn’t a looker I guess, but the updates for 2017 sure make it sound like it’s going to be one hell of a performance value.
