Fifty years ago this September, the MotoGP circus came to Canada for its first and only visit. Next month, the Vintage Road Racing Association is planning a celebration of that event.
The Canadian GP visited Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (still known to most as Mosport) on Sept. 30, 1967; the VRRA’s celebration runs a little early, on Aug. 11-13 at the Ontario track.
At that event, Mike Hailwood won the main feature, Giacomo Agostine took second, and Canada’s Mike Duff (now Michelle) nailed third place in front of a home crowd.
You can see the proposed schedule for the VRRA event here. It’s the usual vintage racing event—along with on-track action, there’s plenty of other fun planned, and a host of roadracing celebrities are supposed to be there, including Michelle Duff, Yvon Duhamel and Phil Read. There’s a long list of the expected guests at the site.
Admission for the event is $10 a day.
And in the 250 race Mike Hailwood won on his Honda six cylinder 250, setting a lap record that stood until the Yamaha TZ700s broke it in the mid-1970s. Bill Ivy won the 125cc GP on his Yamaha V4, lapping the field a coule of times.
Yeah, Yvon Duhamel put up a good battle as well.
