Guy Martin sets sights on land speed record, again

Guy Martin is going to try to take the world’s motorcycle land speed record, as long as the weather co-operates.

Last summer, the popular British roadracer was lined up to challenge for the top motorcycle speed record at Bonneville, but a summer of dumpy weather put an end to racing on the salt flats — and Guy’s attempt. Since then, he’s taken a break from roadracing, but has indulged in other feats of speed; after setting a record for top speed on a Wall of Death, he spent his summer bicycling in an endurance race through the Rocky Mountains.

Now, Triumph and Martin are once again trying to take their 1-2 punch to Bonneville. He’s trying to top the current 376.63 mph FIM record in a purpose-built streamliner. The bike — it looks more like a spaceship — is 25 feet long, and covered in streamlined bodywork. Triumph is using two hot-rodded Rocket III three-cylinder engines to power the racer, running on methanol.

Martin currently holds three Guinness speed records (Wall of Death, gravity-powered snow sled, fastest soapbox) and one British record (fastest hovercraft).
