According to Asphalt & Rubber, the BMW R 1200 GS is getting some upgrades for 2017, to be announced at EICMA.
A&R’s sources say the big Beemer is getting a revised suspension, some revamped bodywork, and some updates to the electrics. Just guessing — we’ll see an updated version of ABS Pro (BMW’s leaning ABS system) fitted as standard, along with a few of the other high-tech features that are standard on the competition’s adventure bikes (hill start assist, etc.).
While the inclusion of high-tech rider aids gains plenty of headlines, the inclusion of the technology aboard a bike does not mean the end of a development process. Just as standard ABS has been refined significantly since its appearance in the 1980s, leaning ABS, traction control, and other similar safety features will be sure to see a few development cycles before the technology is perfected. As a result, flagship bikes like the BMW GS line are almost always the first to receive the latest and greatest tech, which takes its time to trickle down through the lineup.
