As the subject of this test, we decided to compare two of the newer players on the adventure touring scene: the Ducati Multistrada and the Buell Ulysses. We have already published a test of the Ulysses, but as we rode it along with the Ducati, it seemed only appropriate to use it as a comparison for the Multistrada.

The thing was kicking. Kicking as in riding perfectly. I’d bonded fully with BMW’s HP2 as we skipped over the rocks and sandy ruts that dominate the trails around Sudbury in near-north Ontario.

With the temperature hovering in the mid-thirties, I slide the V-Strom to a halt on the delicious gravel road, somewhere deep in Quebec's Laurentian Mountains. Thankfully Triumph have come a long way since the original triple motors that graced such models as the Thunderbird (still around) and the rather bland Thunderbird Sport (dead and good riddance).

Wow, what a difference a motor makes! Triumph have been busy upgrading their triple line with the new 955i motor ever since it debuted in 2001, with the first lucky models to get this gruntmeister heart being the Daytona and Tiger. But that wasn't all that the Tiger gained, it also got slightly reworked and stiffer suspension, and that makes a BIG difference.

I'm a big fan of dual sport bikes. In fact, if you think about it, it could be argued that the dual sport is really the only bike you need.

It’s become an annual event. Larryfest is the last distance test ride of the year and occurs in October. Actually, this was only our second year, but both years to date have seen idyllic weather and taken place out of Larry’s farmhouse in eastern Ontario. Which, as good fortune would have it, is also the ideal launching point for the best twisties you can find in Ontario.
