Triumph’s new made-in-India Scrambler 400 X is one of the best bargains available, at a $6,795 MSRP in Canada this year. But what if you want to beef it up for better off-road capability? Farkling is a vice inherent to motorcyclists, and Rally Raid (off-road specialists in the UK) know this—and they’re here to help owners of this mini-scrambler.
Rally Raid has new suspension solutions, including a Level 1 shock released for owners who want to drop the rear seat (the 400 X has a kicked-up tailsection) and make it easier to throw a leg over. This also improves the oil capacity and damping (with adjustable damping, and adjustable lower mounting eyelet that lets the rider reduce ride height 20-50 mm). Rally raid put the preload adjustment collar at the bottom of the shock so it’s easily accessible, and they will sell you your choice of spring rate to match your weight and the added bulk of your luggage.
For riders who want more performance, they also have a Level 2 shock. This doesn’t change seat height ; Rally Raid says the 400 X has enough suspension travel from the factory for more aggressive riding. Instead you get adjustable damping and the same preload adjustment collar location as the Level 1 shock, and choice of spring rate too.
Rally Raid reckons that some owners may instead want to raise their bike’s front end, due to the stance of the stock machine, and has a new 150 mm fork kit that comes with spring preload adjustment and your choice of a new spring rate. This is made to be fitted by the owner, not by a pricey suspension shop, says Rally Raid:
Our comprehensive longer-travel fork kit completely replaces the internal components with our own design 22mm diameter open cartridges (one in each leg), offering +10mm spring preload adjustment and individual rebound and compression damping adjustment in the replacement fork caps.
Our Scrambler Fork kit is available with a choice of two spring rates (standard and heavy duty), comes complete with our special fork cap tool and a bottle our recommended weight fork oil, and is designed for DIY fit at home.
Rally Raid also has a new set of spoked wheels (a 19-17 set, with Excel rims) available for the Scrambler 400 X, which allow the owner to fit tubeless tires. This will be a popular upgrade for many owners who want to upgrade from the stock cast rims when they’re off-roading.
