Doug Newton proclaims that Rider Radio Rocks is the first and only Internet radio station dedicated to motorcycle enthusiasts in Canada. Launched back in November of 2020, the online station was created to serve motorcyclists by providing unique programming and playing rider-friendly upbeat rock music.
Also known as Uncle Dee, his radio personality alter ego, Newton was always captivated by motorcycle culture and has been riding for 30 years.
A self-proclaimed “Honda Guy”, his first bike was a 1985 Honda Shadow 500. Since then, he’s owned a 2005 Honda Shadow 750 and a 1983 Honda Goldwing. His current bike is a 2014 Honda VT1300 CRA Stateline.
The concept of RRR was born out of frustration that most stations had constant interruptions and frequent commercial breaks, particularly during peak riding hours.
The station was also created to satisfy the needs of riders year-round with unique motorcycle-related programming to keep them engaged.
Influenced as a teenager by a broadcaster at a local radio station who then started his own online station where Newton cut his teeth with his own show, he then branched out to create his very own station from the comfort of his home.
Since then, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. More than 25,000 unique listeners from over 50 countries around the world have tuned in, several bands have approached Newton about being featured on the station which is ranked in the top 5 per cent on the GetMeRadio family of apps. Not bad for only starting four months ago!
Newton hopes that this will only increase as riding season approaches, as he plans on adding more shows with feedback from listeners. He ‘s also looking forward to attending rallies and shows once lockdown restrictions ease up.
