Two members of the racing Duhamel family will make an appearance at the Canadian Motorsports Expo in January.
Yvon Duhamel, a legendary competitor who made his name in international road racing but was willing to throw a front wheel at just about any kind of competition that existed, and his son Miguel, who shares the record for most Daytona 200 wins (five, opposite Scott Russell) and won two AMA Formula Xtreme championships as well as the AMA Superbike championship in 1995 and has won more AMA Superbike races than anyone except Mat Mladin, will be at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, to meet fans, sign autographs, and tell stories about racing.
Yvon Duhamel made the first ever qualifying lap above 150 mph at Daytona in 1969, and rode the H2R three-cylinder two-stroke Kawasaki for the factory team in the early ’70s. He won five AMA national races for the factory.
Miguel was AMA Superbike Rookie of the Year in 1990 and helped Harley-Davidson launch a short-lived Superbike effort in the mid-’90s. He rode for American Honda for 14 years, and has 86 victories in all forms of AMA road racing.
The Canadian Motorsports Expo is a three-day celebration of Canadian racing that runs January 22 to 24 at the International Centre, 6900 Airport Road in Mississauga.
I remember watching Yvon Duhamel racing in Ontario. A friend of mine, John Mulligan, owned Duhamel’s Kawy triple for a short time after Yvon got rid of it.
