Here it is: The classic CMG Pennsylvania tour. This has been a favourite ride of many CMG readers over the years, and we’ve updated it just a bit.

Day 1 takes you in a southerly direction through small towns like Johnsonburg.
Day 1 takes you in a southerly direction through small towns like Johnsonburg.

Day 1 of the Pennsylvania tour sees you starting off just south of Buffalo, NY, off of Rt. 219. If you’re in a hurry to get to all the juicy bits of Day 2, you can just stick to 219 until you get to Rt 255 in Pennsylvania; then, just head in an easterly direction to St. Marys, which is where Day 2 kicks off.

Rt. 219 also makes it easier to speed up the return trip.

Should you decide to take the road less traveled (we highly recommend it!), you’ll spend the day running the same rough north-south route as Rt 219, mostly on the east side. In places (particularly Allegany State Park), you’ll head westward, and at times you’ll be on 219 anyway. Terrain and scenery will be hilly, and the ride will be a blast.

Cops are rare, locals are friendly. You’ll note the roads get much better as soon as you cross the Pennsylvania state line. You’re not going to have to negotiate any metropolitan gridlock through this tour, as it navigates around the major cities.

Of course, as always, keep an eye out for deer; the warmer climate in the US means you’ll see plenty of them dead roadside. Make sure you’re not involved in the next roadkill incident.

You can read about a few of CMG’s previous expeditions to Pennsylvania here, here and here. Some of them cover the eastern section of the state, not the western section we deal with here, but they show the area’s attraction to motorcyclists!
