We’ve already seen two new 390 models in the past few months from KTM: The 390 SMC R supermoto, and the 390 Enduro R. There are two more to come now, with the new KTM 390 Adventure X and 390 Adventure R hitting showrooms in 2025.
What’s different from the past 390 ADV model? At first, it might not look like much; they’re still small orange adventure bikes, with the styling updated to more of a rally raid look. But KTM says more than 90 percent of the parts on these bikes are new, and that starts with the engine. Gone is the old 373cc single, replaced with… a 399cc single. It’s very similar to the old engine, and makes roughly the same power (44hp, 28 lb-ft of torque) with a six-speed gearbox, slipper clutch and optional quickshifter.
The 390 Adventure R comes with a 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel, both with Mitas Enduro Trail E07+ adventure tires on spoked rims. This should be a major update for riders who want to off-road more aggressively; the original 390 Adventure only came with a 19-inch front, 17-inch rear, and several years of production only had cast rims.
Other updates to the Adventure R include an Offroad mode that lets the rider turn off their rear wheel ABS. There’s also a new set of footpegs, adjustable to different positions to better suit an off-road riding stance—this was a common complaint with the older 390 ADV.
The suspension is now updated to a full-adjustable WP APEX open-cartridge fork, as well as a WP APEX shock. There is 230mm of travel front and rear. Dry weight is about 165 kg which includes the weight of the crash bars, which are apparently included as standard, just like previous models. Fuel capacity is 14 liters. KTM says that will last you for 400 kilometers, although you’d surely have to be riding very conservatively to achieve that.
Other updates to the R model include a 5-inch TFT dash with a USB-C charging port alongside. Cornering ABS and traction control are standard, as on previous 390 ADV models. MSRP for Canada is $9,799 for 2025. More info here.
As for the KTM 390 Adventure X: This is street-friendly version of the platform, with cast rims in the 19-17 sizes and suspension to match.
Many of the features are the same: Same frame, same engine, same bodywork. But the price tag is much more appealing, at $7,999, so if you aren’t looking to ride aggressively off-road, this may be a better buy for you.
