Can-Am’s Electric Motorcycles Officially In Production… In Mexico

Can-Am has been out of motorcycle production for about 40 years, but as of this week, they’re back in business. There’s just one catch: The bikes aren’t being made in Canada or the United States as their name implies, but in Mexico.

Bombardier-owned Can-Am was a powerhouse in the off-road scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s but died out as quickly as it rose to prominence. For the past 20ish years, Can-Am has been focusing on street-legal three-wheelers with its Spyder lineup and similar machines. But now, Can-Am returns to the two-wheeled segment with the Pulse and Origin electric motorcycles, built along street tracker and adventure bike lines respectively.

We’ve seen videos of these bikes in action, and have even seen ride reviews of the bikes posted on various sites about three months ago. However, those were pre-production models not intended for the public to purchase or use. Now, Can-Am reports its first publicly-available machines are coming off their Mexican production line as of early December, 2024.

Denys Lapointe, Chief Design Officer for the project, said “It’s great to see the first Can-Am motorcycle roll off the assembly line. We’ve put years of product design, development, and engineering into them to optimize the riding and ownership experience. They’re contemporary, technologically advanced, and they’re designed to be simple and fun to ride regardless of your experience. Once behind the handlebars, riders will see that we built these from the ground up with them in mind, from the nimble handling, to the comfort and ergonomy that makes them feel at one with the bikes. Here’s to awakening the energy within every rider!”

Bold words, considering these machines are as yet unproven to the population at large, and still face the standard limitations all battery bikes face: limited range and high MSRPs. Pricing for the dual-sport Origin model starts at $18,999 in Canada (!!!!!) and the street-only Pulse is priced at $18,299. These machines are playtoys for the well-heeled, not commuters for college students or cheap weekend speed fixes for budget-minded riders.

But even still: It’s a big step forward for the company, and we hope to see improvements on the lineup and its price tags in the future. For a full overview of the current machines, check out Can-Am’s Canadian website here.
