Minibikes, monkey bikes, minimotos (as Honda calls them): Small-bore machines are facing a renaissance these days, for various reasons. Now, we see news from the US that says the Honda Dax125 will be there for the 2025 model year. This leads us to ask: What’s the Dax125, and what about Canada?
The Dax
The current-era Dax model debuted in March, 2022 as an homage to the Dax-series bikes of the 1970s. Here in North America, we called this line the CT series, and these bikes kickstarted the riding career of thousands of kids, and a lot of adults too.
The new Dax125 is powered by the same air-cooled, fuel-injected engine as the Grom 125 (originally, the powerplant that moved the Asian-market Wave 125 scooter). It should make about 9.5 horsepower at 7,500 rpm, and 7.5 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. A pressed-steel frame keeps the price down. Just like the original CT models, the new Dax125 gets a high-rise pipe, underslung engine, a straight seat and general scrambler looks. The tires are most definitely aimed for the street, though. An LCD gauge comes standard, and LED lights.
Will it come to Canada?
But what about our market? Motorcycle.com confirmed the bike for California, but CARB paperwork means nothing about legality in Canada. We already knew that Honda could get the bike here if it wanted, as the Trail 125, Grom and Monkey models are legal here. All those bikes use the same engine.
We’d like to think the new Dax will come here. However, Honda has refused to bring the updated Super Cub to Canada for years, with that same engine, and we were surprised to even see the Trail 125 and Monkey models arrive here. Stay tuned; we’ll let you know more when we hear it. But we wouldn’t be surprised if you have to wait another year or three for the Dax to show up here. And when it does? Don’t be shocked at an MSRP over $6,000. The very-similar Monkey model currently has a price tag of $6,178.
i have a 2023 monkey and love it. I would gladly buy a super cub if offered in Canada. I contacted Honda Canada and they said they have no intentions of bringing the most popular vehicle of all time in the whole world to Canada. even though the mini’s they do sell here sell out
The unknowing always complain about the price
+$6k for a 125cc mini bike. What a world we live in.
