Back to the wacky world of circuit racing, where things are picking up again after the usual mid-summer lull:
Canadian Superbike
As the second Canadian Superbike weekend approaches, CSBK officials have announced the return of the Hard Charger award. As per the press release, “The next event in the Canadian National Superbike Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, August 13-15, will feature the new FAST Riding School Hard Charger Award. The CSBK event at ‘old Mosport’ next month will for the first time offer three Pro Superbike Feature events over the weekend, and each will provide a $500 bonus for the racer deemed to have produced the best effort in context of that race, specifically overcoming a potentially wide range of challenges.
CSBK Media staffers will determine the winner of the FAST Riding School hard charger Award immediately following each of the National Feature class races. The winner will receive the ceremonial ‘big cheque,’ as well as a custom number plate commemorating their unique success.“
Most racers would rather have a win than a Hard Charger Award, but at least the $500 bonus should help pay for some tires.
Last we heard, there were still some tickets left for this weekend’s races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park—check out the CTMP website for more details.
Along with the main title race in Pro Superbike, and the new Hard Charger award, the Brooklin Cycle Racing Pro Rookie of the Year title is also up for grabs (Alex Dumas, who’s also leading the Pro class in points, is a likely winner here). This is the first year for CSBK’s new Constructors Championship, and we also have the Yuasa Batteries sponsored Pole Position Championship. Should be a good weekend!
Baggers at Daytona?
Bagger racing is apparently the Big New Thing in the US. Overweight V-twins on roadracing tracks? Nope, we didn’t see it coming either.
But, with two competing series this summer, it seems bagger racing is here to stay for a while. Now, Roadracing World reports MotoAmerica is testing the idea of running the big cruisers at Daytona, possibly around next March’s 80th running of the Daytona 200. The baggers would be their own race, not in the actual running of the 200 (but think how handy that big fairing would be, for a 200-mile race! And think, you could bring a sandwich, a heated vest, whatever touring accoutrements you require, in those hard bags!).
Say what you want, this might get the V-twin crowd out to the races at Daytona, anyway.
