2022 BMW R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental Unveiled

Following last year’s introduction of the R 18 First Edition, BMW has just unveiled two touring variants that it is adding to the existing lineup. R 18 B bagger and R 18 Transcontinental grand touring models are being launched in September 2021 at a starting MSRP of $26,945 CAD and $29,500 CAD respectively.

The R 18 family gets some new members.

Making use of the same 1,802 cc two-cylinder flat twin “Big Boxer” engine, the most notable additions are the handlebar-mounted front fairing and 27 L saddlebags, with the Transcontinental offering a larger windscreen, standard floorboards, a larger, heated seat, and an additional 48 L top case with integrated backrest. The new models also include a colour 10.25-inch TFT display, a new audio system in partnership with Marshall Amplification, and navigation through the BMW Motorrad Connected app.

The large screen is capable of displaying information in either split screen of full screen format to allow multiple functions to be shown simultaneously, such as navigation, trip computer, phone or media information.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Both the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental offer cruise control as standard, but the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) uses radar sensors in the front fairing to adjust speed or make braking adjustments in order to keep a predetermined distance from the vehicle ahead. Speed and distance can be set in three stages between 30 and 160 km/h. Two settings can be selected in terms of cruise control response: either “Comfortable” or “Dynamic”, which effect the sharpness of both acceleration and deceleration. A cornering control system also automatically reduces speed when cornering if necessary. A reverse assist and Hill Start Control are also offered as optional equipment.

Riding Modes

Standard riding modes include Rain, Roll, and Rock. Automatic Stability Control (ASC) is also featured and can be disengaged. An electronically controlled engine drag torque control (MSR) prevents the rear wheel from slipping or hopping as a result of abrupt throttling changes or downshifting.

Galaxy Dust Metallic Paint

The R 18 B and R18 Transcontinental will also be offered in an iridescent paint finish called Galaxy Dust Metallic that can range from violet to turquoise blue depending on the lighting and angle.

Adaptive LED Lighting

The new R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental make use of LED headlamps within classic designs. Front turn signals and rear signals integrated into the rear cases are also LEDs. An optional “Adaptive Turning Light” was developed specifically for the R 18 B and the R 18 Transcontinental which introduces a swivel function where the low beam turns into the curve according to banking angle to illuminate the corner.
The R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental First Editions

Just as it was with the R 18, the new R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental will be available in exclusive First Edition versions in addition to the standard models at the time of launch. The packages include special paint and surface finishes such as Blackstorm metallic paint with elaborate double-pinstripes in Light white, with handlebar fittings and cylinder head covers outfitted in chrome. First Edition inscriptions are found on the side cases and embroidered on the seat. Customers also get a “First Edition” Welcome Box.
