Before I made the decision to purchase the Thruxton R, I made sure that it was possible to add a passenger seat in case I wanted the option later on. Sure enough, there are a number of choices for stock and aftermarket passenger seats, as well as a selection of foot peg styles available.
Given the design of the seat assembly, replacing it only involves unlocking the stock seat and removing it in favour of its replacement. The new seat just slides in and locks into place.
The Triumph Comfort Dual Seat features a flat leather area for a passenger rather than the plastic cowling of the solo seat. It features the same contrast red stitching but also a unique ribbing where the rider sits to help keep you in place. It also has a stitched Triumph logo in white on the back. I like how easily they can be interchanged since I am a big fan of the rear café racer cowling of the solo seat when I’m riding alone.
Installing the passenger pegs isn’t a very difficult job either, and only requires a few basic tools. The Classic pegs arrived in a box with all of the required hardware to install. You can watch the install video below:
We started by inserting the anchor sleeve into the rubber grips, then threaded and tightened the screws that hold them in place. Then, we loosened the Torx bolt that attaches the muffler to the frame rail. The hardware provided will keep the passenger peg in place and allow it to pivot into an upright position, but requires some assembly. Start by installing the black bracket and tightening in place with the hardware provided. They are specific to each side.
The next step is a bit precarious. Be sure to have a clean work area so you don’t lose any of the pieces. Apply grease to the ball bearing. Then insert the spring into the small opening of the foot peg, followed by the ball bearing. Be sure to carefully hold it in place while placing the stainless-steel bracket over the ball bearing, with the lipped edges out. Holding it together, place the assembly into the black bracket already mounted on the bike using the bolt provided. The bolt is held in place with a thin retaining clip.
The peg should be free to move down into position or up when not in use.
And there you have it, you’re ready to take a passenger on a ride. Now all you need is the passenger.
