Dunlop Mutant: New sport-touring, ADV-touring rubber

Sport-touring enthusiasts and adventure riders want it all: A tire with great grip in wet or dry conditions, long life, sporty handling, and quick to rise to operating temperatures. 

Those are the claimed attributes of the new Dunlop Mutant. Depending which country’s advertising you read, the tire is good for scramblers (so say the American marketeers) or sport touring and street-biased adventure riding (so say the Euro marketeers).

The tire is based around a dual-compound design, with longer-lasting rubber in the middle for highway longevity, and sticker rubber on the shoulders, for grip in the corners.

The Mutant also uses Dunlop’s Jointless Band technology. This design has continuously wound belt inside the tire carcass, which limits dynamic growth and makes handing more consistent, says Dunlop.

The front tire (roughly $260-$290 retail) is available in 17-inch sizes, with one 19-inch option that should fit adventure bikes. The rear ($250-$390 retail) is only available in 17-inch sizes. At this point, the tire doesn’t appear to be available in Canada, though we’d expect it in time for the summer riding season.

MT Multi-Tread
Dunlop’s patented MT Multi-Tread technology in the rear-tire uses a high-mileage compound in the center of the tread for maximum mileage, and high-grip lateral compounds on the shoulders for maximum grip and performance. Multi-Tread helps deliver the best of both worlds: class-leading mileage, and cornering grip that rivals purpose-built sport tires.

Jointless Band technology uses a continuously wound belt within the tire carcass, limiting dynamic growth and making handing more consistent.

4 Seasons Technology combines ply materials and hi-silica compounds with deep, uniquely shaped tread grooves to displace water for maximum traction in wet conditions.

Rayon Ply Casing material allows the Mutant to warm up quickly and helps increase mileage.
