Alex Dumas, one of Canada’s fastest roadracers, is reportedly planning to race in CSBK this summer.
Yesterday, Roadracing World ran a press release from Alex Dumas’ publicist saying the racer was planning a move to Canadian Superbike, riding for the Liqui Moly MPG FAST Riding School Suzuki team aboard a GSX-R1000. We never got the release ourselves, and there’s no confirmation from CSBK, but we’ve got no reason to doubt the report. No doubt the i’s will be dotted and t’s crossed in coming days.
Dumas is well-known as an ice racer in Quebec, but his roadracing success has all come in the US. He won MotoAmerica’s Junior Cup championship in 2018 and the Twins Cup championship in 2019. He moved to the Superstock series in 2020, and earned podiums riding for Team Hammer through the messed-up pandemic year.
Along with his racing for the school’s team, Dumas will also be working as an instructor for FAST Riding School. Remember that the school is under new management now, with longtime instructor Martin Hamel taking over from roadracing legend Michael Mercier. He’s also taking flight training, to become a pilot, so he will be one very busy teenager this summer.
Dumas’ entry into the series could be a fascinating plotline for the 2021 season, as he was very successful the past few years in MotoAmerica, holding his own against much more experienced riders. He’s had years to learn American tracks—will he be instantly mega-fast on Canadian asphalt, or will it take him a year or two to learn the tricks of Shubenacadie, Grand Bend, and the rest? Last season’s champ, Jordan Szoke, has confirmed he’s returning for 2021; if Ben Young (2020 champ) comes back, along with Tomas Casas and Trevor Daley, the top-five power struggle could be the best it’s been in many years.
It is unfortunate (but not at all surprising) that this extremely talented Canadian rider cannot get funding to go racing in the big leagues. Mind you there are no British riders in Moto GP now, no American riders, one Aussie, one Japanese. It has become a European (mainly Spain and Italy) championship now. Mind you there are not a lot of Spanish and Italian hockey players. LOL
Would be great to see him in WSB someday. That’s the greatest circuit racing series in the world, in my opinion, even if the fastest racers aren’t there.
