Long Way Up coming to Apple TV+ in September

Long Way Up, the adventure riding travelogue sequel to Long Way Round and Long Way Down, is coming to Apple TV+ on September 18.

In the early 2000s, actor Ewan McGregor and his buddy Charley Boorman rode big-bore BMW GS adventure bikes around the world (Long Way Round) and from the UK to South Africa (Long Way Down), and shared their adventures through television series. This wasn’t the start of the adventure riding scene—Boorman and McGregor were simply following paths blazed by the Mondo Enduro/Terra Circa expeditions, Helge Pederson, and other adventure riders before them.

However, it showed a whole generation of TV viewers that there was an exciting life beyond the boob tube, and it resulted in the booming adventure bike market we see today. Most GS owners don’t take their bike offroad, but thanks to Charley and Ewan, they can at least dream of blasting through the Serengeti.

After Long Way Round and Long Way Down, there was a lot of speculation about a third television series, following an Argentina-to-Alaska adventure. In summer of 2019, Charley and Ewan did just that, sort of. On The Long Way Up trip, they only rode from Argentina to LA, but when you consider the series’ twist, that’s still a big feat. On this trip, they rode Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycles, which would have added considerable challenge, considering the limited battery range on those machines.

Filming ended last summer, and people have been wondering about the show’s release date ever since. A few weeks back, Apple TV+ confirmed it would air the show. Apple TV+ is a streaming television service, like Netflix, and is not included with an Apple TV device (although, if you buy an Apple TV device, you can get a deal; more information on all that at the company’s website). The first episode runs on September 18, and Apple says new episodes will arrive weekly after that. At this point, we haven’t seen any indication as to how many episodes there will be—see the full Apple TV press release below.

“Long Way Up” to Debut Globally September 18 on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ today unveiled a first look at “Long Way Up,” an epic new motorcycle series, starring and executive produced by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, which reunites best friends after more than a decade since their last motorbike adventure around the world. The first three episodes of “Long Way Up” will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 18, and new episodes will roll out weekly.

Covering 13,000 miles over 100 days through 16 border crossings and 13 countries, starting from the city of Ushuaia at the tip of South America, Ewan and Charley journey through the glorious and underexposed landscapes of South and Central America in their most challenging expedition to date, using cutting edge technology on the backs of their electric Harley-Davidson LiveWire® motorcycles in order to contribute to the sustainability of the planet.

The new series will follow Ewan and Charley as they journey through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and up through Colombia, Central America and Mexico. Also joining them are their longtime collaborators, directors David Alexanian and Russ Malkin following them in their electric Rivians.

“Long Way Up” is a new original series that follows Ewan and Charley’s previous adventures in “Long Way Round” and “Long Way Down.”

The series will join an expanding offering of acclaimed unscripted series and films including the recently announced Fireball,” an original feature documentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog and Professor Clive Oppenheimer; the soon-to-premiere 2020 Sundance US Grand Jury Prize award-winning documentary, “Boys State”; and the acclaimed, five-time Emmy nominated – including for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special – “Beastie Boys Story.”
