The COVID-19 chaos has come to Daytona Bike Week, with the Daytona 200 roadrace and the Daytona TT flat track race both running with no fans in attendance—sort of.
The Daytona 200 and Daytona TT are scheduled to run as a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14. However, a press release today said they will run with nobody watching in grandstands. Nobody except “competitors, crews, officials and other necessary personnel to conduct the race” will be around the track.
Except, for the famous Daytona camping scene. Apparently fans who’ve gotten a camping pass will be allowed to camp at the track still, and can view the racing from their campsites. And, organizers say they’re going to be showing the racing off-site, on a jumbotron across the street. So much for social distancing, apparently.
It’s all being figured out on-the-fly, of course, especially as a visitor to Daytona has just tested positive for COVID-19 and everybody’s on edge. Stay tuned, as there may be more changes yet.
