Dutch racer dies from Dakar injuries

Edwin Straver has died from injuries sustained at this year’s Dakar Rally.

This was Straver’s third Dakar Rally. In 2019, he won the Original By Motul class, formerly known as the Malle Moto class, meaning he completed the race as a solo effort, with no mechanics on a support team. He did all his wrenching and repairs himself.

Straver had been rushed to a Saudi hospital before being flown back to the Netherlands, where he was removed from life support after having his injuries assessed.

Straver, a Dutchman and former MX rider, crashed on Stage 11, breaking his neck and reportedly losing his heartbeat for 10 minutes at the scene. His death follows that of Paulo Goncalves, a high-profile racer with the Hero factory team, who died after a crash on Stage 7 this year.

Straver was 48 years old.
