After four years of absence, motorcycle racing will return to Indianpolis Motor Speedway next summer.
Last time motorcycles raced at the Brickyard, it was MotoGP’s then-annual visit (with MotoAmerica running as a support class) in 2015.
MotoGP isn’t coming back for 2020, but MotoAmerica is, with all five of its classes running at Indianapolis August 21-23.
“The very first motor race at IMS was a motorcycle event in 1909, and we’re proud to welcome the return of two-wheeled racing at the Speedway with MotoAmerica in 2020,” said IMS President J. Douglas Boles in a presser.
Wayne Rainey, currently president of MotoAmerica, said “Being there along with MotoGP in 2015 was a great experience and our races were extremely close and exciting. Now we get the chance to go back with all of our classes in a standalone event and that’s a real privilege … Our riders who didn’t get the opportunity to race at Indy back in 2015 will be pumped to get the chance to race there. We also know that our fans will be just as excited to visit an iconic racetrack in a truly motorsports-driven city.”
Given the success Alex Dumas is having in MotoAmerica right now, and the efforts of other Canadians as well, this could be a fun event for a cross-border road trip next August. It used to be a favourite destination for Canadian speed junkies, as it was a great opportunity to watch AMA roadracing and MotoGP all at the same time, but since 2015, it’s been a car-only track.
