This is a collection of roads that Editor ‘Arris very much enjoyed when he lived in the GTA, and is also quite accessible from Ottawa as well. If you’re sick of the silliness of the Big City, this is an excellent way to break free of that funk, and get lost on two wheels.
Ontario generally has a reputation for busy, heavily-policed, straight roads, but these areas are all-around better, as they tend to go through country areas in the Canadian Shield, and often have good restaurants or other interesting locations along the way. There’s an old ghost town in Balaclava, the Bancroft Mineral Museum, great Polish food at the Wilno Tavern … whether you’re the type of rider who just likes to find a good road and keep up the pace, or the type who likes to stop and see interesting things along the way, you won’t be bored on these roads.
Many of these roads featured in previous editions of the Mad Bastard Scooter Rally, or CMG’s old Discover Your Roads routes. There are many side roads in this area that are just as good as the ones on the map, so if you feel like taking a diversion down another interesting route, go ahead. When you’re done the run, you can use Hwy. 7 to get back to your starting point, or run it all in reverse.
