The Kananaskis Trail, aka the Highwood Pass, or Route 40, is a very well known access route into the Rockies, with incredibly high elevations and amazing scenery. Not only are there breathtaking mountain views and lots of wildlife along the way (beware!), but if you’re into camping or hiking or other outdoorsy pursuits, there’s lots of opportunity. And the curves on the road, and in the side roads in the area, are fantastic. Just don’t get nabbed doing extra-legal velocity.
You can rip down to the 40 on Route 1, but the map below gives a much more interesting approach to the region. Much of Route 40 is closed seasonally, so you can only ride the entirety of this route between June 15 and Dec. 1, and you probably won’t want to be out on your bike that late in the season.
If you’ve got an adventure bike, there’s plenty of gravel to explore in this area as well. CMG contributor Jeremy Kroeker regularly flogs his KLR off-road in this part of the country.
