The World Superbike championship already runs a double-header for its superbike class every race weekend, and next year, there will be a third race added.
Up until Sunday, the weekend will look much the same as now, with the first race running on Saturday at 2 PM. But, on Sunday, there will be a sprint race added to the schedule, with the superbikes out at 11 AM. Then, the weekend’s third superbike race will run at the usual 2 PM timeslot that afternoon. Rounds held outside Europe might see slightly different schedules, but that is the general idea of how Dorna is going to run things.
So why the changes? According to WSB’s executive director Daniel Carrera, this is something the series has been planning for a long time. Carrera says “We are committed to bringing exciting races to the fans year on year, and we think the addition of a sprint race will add to the WorldSBK experience. We are continuing to work on the final adjustments and hope to bring more details in the near future.”
OK then. Whether it’s a brilliant plan, or a stinker, we’ll know either way next summer, once the details are hammered out and the scoring system is set up.
