At the double-header showdown in Aragon this weekend, the final fight went down between Jonathan Rea and Chaz Davies.
In Race 1, Rea prevailed over Davies. A massive crash between Leon Camier, Jordi Torres and Lorenzo Savadori caused the race to be red-flagged after three laps (Camier’s in hospital, stable, but with closed chest trauma, the other two riders are okay). After the restart, Rea finished first, Davies second and Xavi Fores was third.
Tom Sykes, usually a contender for a podium, finished all the way down in sixth, with Marco Melandri (fourth) and Michael Van Der Mark ahead of him. Melandri seems like he’s going to be a threat this year if he can get his Ducati sorted out, and Van Der Mark seems to be having a better year on the Yamaha than he did on the Honda.
In Race 2, Davies and Rea switched positions, and Melandri finished third. Alex Lowes and Michael Van Der Mark took their Yamahas to fourth and fifth respectively.

After this weekend’s racing, Rea is in the top spot in the standings, with 114 points. Davies is second with 102, and Melandri is third with 96.
Things are much tighter in World Supersport, where Lucas Mahias is in first with 58 points (Yamaha). Sandro Cortese is in second with 54 points (Yamaha) and Randy Krummenacher is in third with 50 points, also on a Yammie. Seems that new R6 is the way to go in that class this year. Meanwhile, longtime WSS championship challenger Kenan Sofluoglu is still out of the race for top spot as he recovers from injuries suffered in the opening race in Australia. There’s gossip he may be forced to retire as a result of his crash.
