Could Skully turn into a zombie brand?

Failed smart helmet marque Skully could turn into the first motorcycle zombie brand of the 21st century.

Most motorcyclists are familiar with zombie brands: motorcycle marques that just won’t die, resurrected by someone who’s aiming to use the company’s respected history to build a small fortune (usually by starting with a large fortune).

Good examples of this are failed manufacturers like Excelsior-Henderson and Crocker, companies that were revived but hardly to what we’d call vitality. True, some companies are able to thrive again after being brought back to life (Indian has done well under Polaris, Triumph is making lots of money these days), but many other marques just fade back into history relatively quickly (Moto Morini, Horex).

However, all these brands have one thing in common: a history of producing interesting motorcycles that, at one point, generally offered some measure of competence. That’s not the case with Skully. Skully made a lot of headlines with its innovative product offerings (its smart helmets were the first to gain widespread publicity), but then never delivered most of the ordered helmets, and folded leaving many riders with nothing to show for their deposit money.

In the aftermath of the company’s closure, there were allegations that Skully’s bigwigs spent company funds on high-end sports cars and strippers, which did little to engender goodwill.

Now, somebody is emailing Skully’s former customers and trying to tempt them into another go-round.

Ivan Contreras, President of the new company SKULLY Technologies, assembled a new leadership team and has located the headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

SKULLY Technologies is unrelated to the former SKULLY, Inc., which filed bankruptcy and is no longer in business. Although SKULLY Technologies has no formal obligation to the customers of the now defunct SKULLY, Inc., we recognize that hundreds of SKULLY helmet enthusiasts around the world have contributed to this product and were understandably disappointed that they never received one.

We are determined to make this right.
