Spaniard Alfredo Gomez is the winner of the 2017 Red Bull Hare Scramble at the Erzbergrodeo.

Run in an open pit iron mine in Austria, the Erzbergrodeo is one of hard enduro’s most prestigious events, and the Hare Scramble is the highlight of the weekend. It’s tough to qualify and even tougher to finish the race; out of 500 riders who started the Red Bull Hare Scramble, only 25 finished within the four-hour limit this year.

Despite the difficult terrain and tough competition, Gomez managed to finish in two hours, 17 minutes, six seconds—a convincing performance, to say the least. British rider Johnny Walker (a three-time winner) took the lead early in the race, but Gomez got past him and then had to fight off Graham Jarvis, last year’s winner (and also British). Gomez prevailed, finishing three minutes and 22 seconds ahead of Jarvis.

Third place eventually went to the USA’s Cody Webb, South African Wade Young got fourth, and Walker ended up fifth.

This was the second time Gomez won the race; he took first back in 2015 as well.
