2016 Macau GP results

Peter Hickman is the winner of the 2016 Macau GP, aboard a Kawasaki ZX-10R. It was the 50th edition of the classic street race.

Hickman’s best lap was 2:25.333; he finished 0.533 ahead of second-place Michael Rutter (BMW). Martin Jessop (BMW) was third (-0.655), but Jessop had the best lap, at 02:24.9.

Rutter was the man to beat going in to the race (practice and qualifying results here), but Hickman prevailed, finishing with a 29:15.590 time in the 12-lap event.

Conor Cummins (Honda), Horst Saiger (Kawasaki), Stuart Easton (BMW), John McGuinness (Honda), Ian Hutchinson (BMW), Derek Sheils (Suzuki), and Dan Cooper (BMW) rounded out the top 10. Glenn Irwin (Ducati) almost made it to the podium, after posting great qualifying times and running close behind the leaders; however, mechanical problems took him out on the last lap.

So, what about Canadian Superbike champ Jordan Szoke’s good news? Unless the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy awards a load of points to Hutchinson for an eighth-place finish, Szoke should have BMW’s in-house competition sewn up, meaning he’ll be flown to Germany for the end-of-season celebration and a big cheque pretty soon, if all goes well, as this competition was the only real chance for another racer to surpass Szoke’s lead in the standings.
