EICMA: Suzuki confirms GSX-250R for developed markets

In a sign of where entry-level bikes are headed, Suzuki confirmed their made-in-China GSX-250R will head to developed markets.

When Suzuki started previewing the GSX-250R sportbike in Asian markets, people wondered if it would ever make it to dealerships in developed countries. It seems the answer is “Yes,” as the bike has been unveiled at the EICMA show.

Details on the entry-level sportbike are available here (about 25 hp, 178 kg curb weight). It’s another Suzuki that’s built around their made-in-China GW250 motor (retuned, with new cams and intake valves for more power). Surprisingly, suspension is from KYB, so maybe Suzuki has pulled off a feat no other manufacturer bothers: Building a beginner bike with a low-powered engine, but great suspension.

The GSX-250R is obviously a sportbike, but with a seating position that’s sensible enough for everyday use. ABS is optional in some markets, but will likely be standard in others. It’s certainly not the high-spec powerhouse that jaded western buyers are always clamouring for, but it should provide reliable use for learners or budget-conscious buyers.

The big question is, is it coming to Canada? We haven’t heard either way yet, but we’d be surprised if it doesn’t.
