The FIM has announced a new roadracing series based around 300-class motorcycles, to run under the World Superbike umbrella.
The international racing governing body officially titled the new series the WorldSSP 300 Championship. With the recent increase in motorcycles in the 300 cc range, it’s designed to give learning roadracers a chance to practice their trade in a feeder series for World Supersport (which focuses on 600 cc motorcycles), but will also give manufacturers a chance to display their entry-level sportbikes on the track. It’s also supposedly a way for contestants to keep their entry costs down, although it’s hard to imagine it will be cheap to race.
It seems the series’ name is a bit misleading, as the approved motorcycles include Honda’s CBR500R, Yamaha’s R3, and KTM’s RC390 — all well above 300 cc. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 (296 cc) is the only real 300 on the list.
To enter, contestants must be at least 15 years old. A full list of regulations is here.
There has been no comment on the future of the European Junior Cup in light of the new series.
