Russian 2wd bike is apparently now on the market (and it’s not a Ural)

Remember that wacky two-wheeled-drive Russian minibike that was making the Internet rounds a few months back? Well, if what we read on the Internet is true (hah!), it’s now on the market.

The Taurus 2×2 has a strong similarity to the Rokon motorcycles built in New Hampshire. Like the Rokons, it’s two-wheeled-drive (chain-driven front wheel), powered by a relatively low-tech stationary motor (a Honda GX210, putting out 7 hp). Like the Rokon, the 2×2 will float, thanks to the air capacity of its massive wheels.

However, the 2×2 has a couple different features as well. The Taurus will fold in half, so you can store it in your car’s trunk — their idea, not ours. The bodywork means you’re less likely to burn yourself on the hot engine (the Rokons have no bodywork).

Other numbers: The Taurus has a two-speed transmission, a top speed of about 35 km/h, and it headlight, electric start, and battery are optional. It has disc brakes front and rear, and a four-liter fuel capacity. And, according to the makers, it can power through up to 45 cms of snow — a valuable feature for a motorcycle in The Motherland, and a handy feature for Canada too. Supposedly, they’re six months away from releasing models to other countries outside Russia, but don’t expect to pop down and see one at your dealership anytime soon.

Find more details on the Taurus 2×2 here. When it was in concept stage, it was supposed to cost around $1,000 USD in kit form when it came to market, but whether that’s the end result, we don’t know.
