MotoGP returning to Finland

MotoGP is returning to Finland after a decades-long absence, to a new track.

Over the weekend, MotoGP authorities announced they’d inked a deal with the owners of the KymiRing, a track that’s currently under construction. The track is near the city of Kouvola, and is expected to be completed and approved for the 2018 racing season.

Finland has a strong history of MotoGP racing; the Scandinavian country hosted GP racing from 1962 to 1982 at the cities of Tampere and Imatra. In 1972, Jarno Saarinen won the 250 GP series for Finland. He died a year later in Italy. Currently, Mika Kallio is planning to represent the country when he races for KTM, starting in 2017.

The new track will have 17 corners — nine right-handers, and eight left-hand turns.
