New “dark” model coming from Indian

Once again, Indian is about to launch a new “dark” model, with an expected arrival date of May 11.

In an age where flash sells cruisers, and aftermarket bling sucks in even more money, most cruiser manufacturers are now building what they call “dark” models — economy versions of their cruisers that usually feature matte paint jobs, blacked-out exhausts in place of chrome, and other similar cost-cutting measures. Not everyone wants a bike that looks like they might have just stolen it from Liberace, and not everyone can afford such a machine.

Indian’s first dark model was the Chief Dark Horse, unveiled last winter. Now, CARB documents are pointing to a similar model titled the Chieftan Dark Horse. Expect a blacked-out bagger version of the Chieftan, maybe with cut-down bodywork, similar to Honda’s F6B, although the Chieftan’s luggage and fairings are pretty spartan to begin with.
