He might be coming off a suspension on the AMA circuit, but James Stewart proved he’s still a top racer at the Red Bull Straight Rhythm event yesterday, and his brother Malcolm had a dominant performance as well.

If you’re not familiar with Red Bull Straight Rhythm, you can read about it here; basically, it’s a drag race along a straight, half-mile-long MX-style track, complete with jumps, whoops, etc. Several of the world’s top off-road racers were invited to compete in this year’s event, in head-to-head showdowns to prove who’s the flyest of the fly.

James Stewart won the open class last year, and took it again this year; his final race was against German rider Ken Roczen, who knocked Ryan Dungey out in the semi-final. Stewart beat him in the second run of the best-of-three final.

Stewart’s younger brother Malcolm, racing in the Lite class, was matched up with Shane McElrath in the final, and took the win in that class. Malcolm hadn’t lost a single race on the day en route to that win.

There’s plenty of video of the event on Red Bull’s YouTube channel, but you can see some highlights embedded below.

  1. I thought James’ suspension was over in August of this year???? And he wasn’t banned from the AMA circuit – it was an FIM suspension.

    • He was banned from AMA supercross and their MX circuit, from what I understand. I assume that’s because those are the FIM-certified events in the US he would compete at.

We never covered it at the time, and we probably should have. Bubba Stewart getting suspended is like Jorge Lorenzo getting suspended.

He hasn’t raced all year. He said he “got off the couch” to come to Straight Rhythm. I need a couch like that.
