This weekend: Grand Prix de Mud vintage racing festival

Fans of vintage off-roading can head to Campbellville, Ontario this weekend for a quick fix, at the inaugural Grand Prix de Mud event.

The Grand Prix de Mud is a celebration of old-school dirt bikes and off-road racing, presented by ex-Dakar competitor Lawrence Hacking at the Mohawk Inn – the same place that hosts his Overland Rally (officially, Husqvarna Canada is presenting the event).

The event runs Saturday, and it has a busy schedule, including grass track scrambles, trials, and a cross-country race, on vintage bikes and modern machinery. Altogether, there are 42 trophies for the claiming this weekend, so expect lots of racing.

Sign-up for the racing starts at 8 AM; there’s a riders meeting at 9:45. Spectators can attend for free.

There will also be a showcase of vintage off-road bikes, and several notable racers are expected to show as well (people like guest of honour eight–time AMA National Enduro Champion Dick Burlesonformer along with World Champion hill climber John Williams, ISDT Gold Medal winner Helmut Classen, former Ontario Provincial motocross champion Glen Nicholson and others).

There’s also a swap meet at the event, if seeing all those old-school bikes on display motivates you to restore your own two-smoker that’s been lying unused in the shed since the last time you burnt out the piston rings.

The whole event is organized by the vintage enthusiasts at Sasquatch Racing – you can find out more about them and the event here.
