  1. Winter tires rule is effective from December 15 to March 15 so cant be the issue here , the British plates ,the time of year they were riding and the state of their ride are the more likely cause. ( BTW M+S rated tires don’t cut anymore sadly, tires must now have the winter pictogram )

But I think that you are right about vehicles passing trough as the rule implies vehicles registered in Québec. I don’t know all the rules but I wonder if they are really allowed to take such actions on a temporary imported vehicle but then I wouldn’t be surprised coming from Québec , it wouldn’t be a surprise either if they gave themselves the right to do so. Anyway you have quite well explained it. All I wanted to say really is that you are right , bunch of dicks they are.

  2. I’m surprised they didn’t get dinged for not having M+S rated tires, since Quebec requires those in the winter months.

And no, Quebec cannot enforce provincial rules on vehicles passing through. They can probably enforce the common stuff that is necessary to meet the FMVSS (or Canada’s version), but I’m pretty sure that they can’t legally (for example) stop every car entering Quebec in the winter and ticket them for not having snow tires. What a bunch of dicks. I would blame Quebeckers for it, but then I look at the stupid government of this province, and I know that it, never mind half the shit they do, does not have the support of anything like 50% of the people of this province. Politics, sigh…

  3. Sadly it is not just Quebec.
In BC I had to get get my bike inspected because it did not have a light over the licence plate. Once I pointed out said light to the officer, I still had to get my bike inspected because he “was sure there must be something else wrong with it”

I can’t remember how many hundreds of dollars I had to spend on the inspection, but the only thing they could find was that my chain was at about 80% near the end of it’s life…

  4. It’s such a shame because I really like riding through Quebec, but am reconsidering if CMG should be promoting Quebec rides after this.

    • Yes, I was actually going to go there because of your ride report. So instead I’ll give the yanks my tourism dollars. What I can’t understand is how they can enforce the laws on out of province vehicles? I know in NS you have to have signals. but NB you don’t I used to ride my old Honda in NS a lot when I lived in Moncton and it did not have signals. I used hand signals and never had a problem, I bet I’d go to Jail in Quebec.

  5. They got screwed royally by the idiot Quebec government rules, after reading the problems they had I canceled my planned ride through the mountains outside MTL there and switched it to ME/NH/VT instead, I have aftermarket signals etc. on my GL and I am not going to pay fines for them. I think from now on I will drive through the US on my way to ON and give my tourism $$ to a nicer place!
