Polish rider dies in Dakar rally

An off-road motorcycle racer died yesterday during Stage 3 of the Dakar Rally.

The rider, 39-year-old Michal Hernik (KTM) from Poland, was found 300 metres off the track of the rally yesterday, and showed no external signs of being involved in an accident. It was his first time running the Dakar Rally.

Race officials decided to search for Hernik after he did not finish the special stage by 3:16 PM local time and his Iritrack signal was lost. With no signal, it took searchers a while to find him; his body ws not discovered until almost an hour later, when an ambulance helicopter found him at the 206-km mark at 4:03 PM.

The staff at Canada Moto Guide wishes to express their condolences to Hernik’s friends, family and team at this sad time.
