Bonneville’s Speed Week has been canceled after heavy rains flooded the salt flats, making it impossible for racers to compete.

This would have been the 100th anniversary of Bonneville’s first world record, and racing was supposed to start Saturday. Alas, torrential rains have meant that unless you’re racing a hovercraft, you ain’t running the sale this week. The Southern California Timing Association has closed the event.

Supposedly, there is some hope that racers will be able to make up for the event later in the year, but for many folks, this was their only chance for 2014, as the money required to travel to the event won’t be there for a second trip this year.
