Johnny Pint (or as his mother called him when she was mad, John McGuinness) is going to take another stab at electric racing.
While McGuinness is best known for his petrol-powered exploits at the Isle of Man TT, he’s ridden in the TT Zero electric race a couple times as well; he finished second last year, and he’s going to try again this year.
In 2014, he’ll be racing a Mugen again. Mugen’s got long-standing ties to Honda (they’ve been called Honda’s secret factory team), so McGuinness is the natural choice if they want to take first. The 2014 bike has been christened “Shinden Sam,” and it’s supposed to have even more power than last year’s machine.
Last year, Michael Rutter took first place, only two seconds ahead of McGuinness; both McGuinness and Rutter broke the previous electric lap record by over a minute.
Check out the video below for a look at McGuinness’s electrifying 2013 IOMTT heroics.
I think you’ll find that he’s colloquially known as ‘John McPint’ rather than Johnny Pint. Just sayin’.
Glad to see he’ll ride the Mugen again. Should be a good race this year.
Hey Trane, I’ve heard TV’s talking heads him called Johnny Pint.
Learn something new everyday, I guess. 🙂 I’ve been following his career since forever and have never heard him referred to as such. McPint, on the other hand, will get you a bazillion hits on Google, for example.
Cheers, Zac. 🙂
It is also possible my suspect hearing misled me. Too many years of riding and shooting without earplugs haven’t done me any favours.
