Goodbye, carburetors! Ural is updating their lineup for 2014 – read on.

In a world that’s taking an increasingly dim view of carbon emissions, even Ural, the most anachronistic of all motorcycle marques, must abandon carburetors. Ural’s sidecar rigs and solo bikes now have fuel injection, pieced together from components from Bosch and Delphi.

To fully use all the advantages offered by EFI, Ural has increased the size of the airbox on the upgraded models, and the cam profile has been changed. The end result is a powerplant that not only produces less emissions and gets better fuel mileage (31-37 mpg, instead of 21-33 mpg), but peak horsepower is up a bit (to 41 hp, from 40), and torque has been greatly improved.

The Urals now make about 42 ft-lbs of torque at 4300 rpm, instead of 38 ft-lbs at 4500 rpm. The revised torque curve is a huge improvement over the previous motor, as it makes 90 per cent of max torque under 2300 rpm – a valuable trait for a sidecar rig. Maximum cruising speed has now been upgraded to 70 mph, from 65 mph.

The brakes have been upgraded as well – there’s now a disc brake in back on the bike, instead of a drum. The sidecar brakes have also been upgraded to disc brakes, with two-piston caliper.

The new Urals also shaved off a bit of pork – they weigh 730 lbs dry, down from 739. It’s a small improvement, but it’s a move in the right direction.

  1. You see me surprised and happy , all great improvement , I cant afford one at the moment but must admit the drum brakes were a bit of a turn off at that price.
