KTM factory rider Kurt Caselli is dead after crashing in the Baja 1000 off-road race last weekend.

Reports say Caselli crashed in a sandy, high-speed section of the race on Friday. Early rumours said he’d crashed in a booby trap laid by Mexican spectators (the traps are a long-running Baja tradition), but later, officials dispelled that story.

Caselli was 30 years old. He was engaged, and had placed second and third in this year’s earlier races in the SCORE series, and had been a surprise star at the 2013 Dakar Rally. He was in the lead at this year’s Baja 1000 when he crashed.

The Johnny Campbell Racing team once again took the race, and the series. Timmy Weigand, Colton Udall, David Kamo and Mark Samuels shared the win, which was in doubt after Udall destroyed his Honda 450’s front wheel in a crash.
