It looks as if Yamaha could be working on a new twin-cylinder motor.

The Japanese manufacturer recently released a new triple, the FZ-09, their first three-cylinder effort in a long time. Now it appears the company may also be working on a twin, also based on the R1 motor. The autoby.jp blog has published photos of a twin-cylinder next to their new triple, in a display case at a dealer meeting or similar activity.

Yamaha already produces a big-bore parallel twin, for their Super Tenere adventure bike, so this isn’t as revolutionary an idea as their triple. But, it does make us wonder what other projects they’re working on.

You can see a couple more views of the motor in the gallery below.

  1. “What exactly is Yamaha planning with this new twin?”

Dunno which bike will feature it, but the label on the display clearly indicates that the twin is a crossplane concept design. That at the very least makes the new engine 100% buzzword compliant.

  2. Go Yamaha! it’s not the honda snore-fest. Both engines look great. Glad to not to see any fake cooling fins, Kawasaki take note. The new FZ-09 is so much more motorcycle than the blando safety scooter NC700SA.
