Vance and Hines fined by California government

Vance and Hines is a big company, but a $500,000 fine couldn't come at a worst point in the industry's history.

Aftermarket exhaust manufacturer Vance and Hines has been fined $500,000 by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Cyril Huze says the hefty half-million fine was handed down last month; apparently, Vance and Hines sold around 2,000 exhaust units that weren’t pre-approved by CARB. CARB decided to make an issue over it (California emissions laws are hazy – pardon the pun – and some of Vance and Hines’ products don’t require pre-approval, Huze says), and ended up settling the issue with the huge fine.

Maybe you’re outraged by this, or maybe you aren’t concerned, because it happened in the U.S., but you’d better get used to the idea of being hassled over aftermarket exhausts; between insurance companies, environmental agencies, and anti-noise advocates, there are more and more hoops for aftermarket pipe makers to jump through all the time.

  1. I guess the person in the street has had enough of noise pollution. The streets belong to everyone, not just bikers with overly loud pipes.

  2. As if the motorcycle industry hasn’t been kicked in the groin enough lately. Vance & Hines builts the most socially responsible cruiser exhausts in the after market .
    Dealers will suffer.
