KTM update: 1190 Adventure is on the way

Sure, we have to wait a little longer than our friends across the pond, but KTM's 1190 should still be here in 2013.

KTM introduced a lot of new motorcycles late last year, but how many of them are coming to Canada?

The electric Freeride is mired down in U.S. government red tape - or at least, that's the word on the street.

According to CMG’s top-secret informant, the KTM 1190 Adventure that everyone was lusting after in the wake of EICMA will still likely show up in North America in 2013 as a 2014 model. That was expected – we’d been hearing that story since the bikes were first unveiled last fall.

However, we were disappointed to hear KTM’s Freeride models don’t seem to be headed here anytime soon. KTM’s global website offers two Freeride models to the rest of the world, the Freeride E (battery powered) and the Freeride 350 (with an old-fashioned gas engine).

Alas, it seems the electric Freeride is still stuck in government testing down in the U.S., and Canadian availability usually depends on the outcome of that testing. Get ready for a wait …

The Freeride 350 has its own problem, maybe even harder to overcome. KTM bigwigs don’t figure there’s enough demand for this machine to bring it in. They’d sell a few, but not enough to allow a competitive price. Once again, the average North American’s “bigger is better” attitude is screwing things up for riders who happen to like something other than litre-bike crotch rockets and blinged-out cruisers.

Having said that, the 350 will probably be imported here (before the electric version), but you’re going to have to wait.
