It appears that Carlos Checa's in front of the pack again during private WSBK testing.

It seems Carlos Checa is still on top of his game.

Checa, the 2011 World Superbike champion, was the fastest rider on the final day of this week’s private three-day test session at Phillip Island in Australia. Tom Sykes was second fastest, Leon Haslam came in third, and Max Biaggi was fourth.

The day didn’t go so well for Eugene Laverty. He crashed on the course’s first corner, breaking his hand and possibly suffering a concussion. He’ll be unable to run in the official WSBK tests, that start Monday.

In other racing news, it seems MotoGP will return to Portugal this season. There’s been speculation that series organizers were planning to cancel the Estoril track’s round, especially since local government seemed reluctant to help out with costs, but that’s apparently not the case, at least for 2012 – MotoGP will return this season. Still, with new stops in Texas and Argentina, and other regions like India and South Korea hoping for MotoGP appearances, Portuguese fans may be out of luck in the future.
