Suzuki is planning to focus on hydrogen fuel cell technology, reports Gizmag magazine.

According to the article, Suzuki is joining forces with Intelligent Energy to form startup SMILE FC System Corporation, to develop and manufacture fuel cell systems.

It’s a logical move, as the two companies have already been co-operating for six years, even developing a fuel-cell version of the Burgman maxi-scooter that was displayed at the 2011 motorcycle show in Tokyo. They also built the Crosscage concept motorcycle together. Gizmag figures they’ll sell the Burgman first, but also develop a car with the same technology.

In the past months, we’ve seen plenty of battery-powered concept and production bikes come to the front, but not many manufacturers seem to be messing around with fuel cell technology. We’ll keep an eye on this story for you, and let you know if we hear anything more – this could be an interesting twist in the fight for alternative energy.
