New Harley models on the way

The "spy shots" for the Seventy-Two and the Softail Slim appear to come from company brochures ...
Sure, it looks like a bike from a movie like Easy Rider or Shaft, but rumour has it that Harley-Davidson will announce it next week.

So you want a new Sportster-based or Fat Boy-based Harley-Davidson? Well, you should be getting your wish soon.

The gossip on the interwebs has Harley-Davidson releasing two new models this year, based on the Sportster and the Fat Boy.

The Sportster-based machine will be called the Seventy-Two, and is supposed to be a throwback to the groovy days when brothers bolted a set of righteous-looking apehangers on, shortened their fenders, and headed out for life on the open road, sticking it to The Man along the way. In other words, it’s supposed to be a throwback to 1972, the same way the Forty-Eight is a throwback to, well, 1948.

“Spy shots” seem to show period-correct apes to hang off, metallic paint, a ton of chrome, forward controls, and whitewall tires. We’re guessing it’ll be based on the 1200 Sportster, not the 883.

The other bike allegedly in the works, the Softail Slim, is supposed to be a sort of bobber, with Hollywood handlebar, flat black paint and spokes and other low-key touches. Of course, it should have Harley’s 103-cubic inch motor.

The word on the street is that these bikes should be confirmed sometime next week.
